Tooltips see-through in Diablo II: Resurrected?

If item tooltips, item labels and name tags have gone faint, with your inventory or the ground showing straight through them, the cause is HDR. There are two fixes, and players confirm both.

Normal: a solid dark panel behind the text.

With HDR on: the panel all but gone, the inventory showing through.

It is a known bug, reported on Blizzard's forums, on Windows 11 and Windows 10 alike. The game's fullscreen mode behaves like a borderless window, so Windows lays its own HDR over the top, and the dark backgrounds behind tooltips, item labels, name tags and the health bar of whatever you target lose most of their opacity. The game has no HDR setting of its own; the switch is in Windows.

Fix 1: switch HDR off in Windows

Press Win + Alt + B. Windows switches HDR off and shows a small notice saying so, and the tooltips come back solid straight away. Press it again to switch HDR back on when you are done playing.

That shortcut belongs to Xbox Game Bar. If nothing happens, update Game Bar from the Microsoft Store, or use the setting instead: open Settings, then System, then Display, and turn Use HDR off. On Windows 10 it is under Windows HD Color settings on the same page.

Fix 2: keep HDR, turn on Large Font Mode

In the game, open Options, then Gameplay, and turn on Large Font Mode. As well as larger text, it gives tooltips and item labels their dark background back.

Two things to know. It makes the whole interface bigger, not just the text. And it does not fix the health bar of whatever you target, which stays hard to read while HDR is on.

Why it matters when you trade

A see-through tooltip is hard for anyone to read, including the buyer looking at the screenshot in your trade post. The stat lines sit on top of whatever was behind them, and a single misread number is a different item.

It also drains the colour of the item's name, and in Diablo II the colour is the quality: crafted orange and unique gold differ only in how strong the colour is, so on an HDR screenshot a crafted item can pass for a unique. Switch HDR off before you take the picture, and the colours come out as the game draws them.
